[E–Libro] El Leopardo al sol

This is a tale of fratricidal Columbian drug angsters and the women who love themOnce upon a time the Barrag ns and Monsalves were cousins and friends and shared their criminal enterprise But then Nando Barrag n killed Adriano Monsalve in a drunken barroom fight over the widow Bracho what the French would call cherchez la femme and the two sides of the family began an almost ritualized series of revenge killings Prolific breeders the two sides have plenty of lives to suanderThe first sentence of the linear notes on the jacket cover hints that there will be some West Side Story feel to THIS AND AS IF TO RATIFY THAT ONE SEUESTERED and as if to ratify that one seuestered spend a night on a couch chastely watching that very movieThis is my third book by Laura Restrepo I like how she takes chances not having some template She uses an interesting writing techniue here Popping up now and again through the story is italicized dialogue We don t know who s speaking to whom but it sounds like some ongoing The Unlikeliest Hero: The Story of Desmond T. Doss gossip from the surrounding community In this way it advanced the story while not always being entirely reliable There were times that this seemed designed to explain things without needing to incorporate the action in the main narrative Like acknowledging that there was sex without having to undergo the inevitable clumsiness of writing it out That was okay mostly except when that techniue was used in the big climatic shootout scene This is aood story well told The author nicely develops character even in a very crowded book The lawlessness was startling as it was meant to be The lack of overnmental authority was just as startling We never see a cop and it isn t until the last twenty pages that Colonel Pinilla shows up with a platoon eight jeeps three motorcycles and a tank The colonel proves however to be no effectual than Officer Krupke i can t believe i finished this book maybe it was a bad translation but the writing was bad and the techniue of i don t know modern day reek chorus that she used was unbearable i am in colombia and read it for a book roup and everyone agreed skip it Super ood book it really connects with me The book is about two Colombian families name the Monsalves and the Barraganes both families are in the drug dealer and they both want to kill each other only because they are opponents in their business Inside each family can see how women don t make decisions in the business or in each family we can see how women don t make decisions in the business or in family Also its a book where love and feelings are not important at the moment dealing with the drug business The beginning is like something straight out of Scarface the pock marked angster and the beautiful woman he s always wanted are. Another Book In Spanish Only
book in Spanish only three jobs keep Mr. Jelly's Business getting in the way I love it though I oftenet distracted wondering if it reads like literature or like People magazine in English Leopard in the Sun was a real treat and I think magic realist fiction enthusiasts will enjoy it After reading the first sentence on the dust jacket I couldn t wait to devour this one Imagine the Sicilian history of The Godfather rewritten by Gabriel Garcia Maruez or West Side Story reinterpreted by Isabel Allende and you have a sense of Laura Restrepo s unforgettable novel of the making of Colombia s drug cartels I couldn t have said it better myself Likewise since Gabriel Garcia Maruez is my favorite author and was once followed closely in that lineup by Isabel Allende before her two m I bought this at a library sale last summer not knowing really what it was Just seemed like a theme I didn t know much about Stylistically this was not my taste whatsoever While I can t seem to put down a book without finishing it I was resolved at the halfway mark to toss it in the trash when I finished rather than inflict it on another person Then the completely immoral and lets face it evil main characters began to show signs of actual humanity Beyond the 6 1/2 Body Parts (Body Movers, grossly excessive lifestyles and meaningless murders they appeared to finally care about something or at least someone Itot me through the second half Sadly the narrative concluded pretty much the only way it could and that I suppose was the author s point Anyway I learned some new things about how lives can be lived and I appreciate my own just a little bit A decent read but it didn t impress me as much as I hoped it would I have read other books by Restrepo and found this difficult to read and appreciate In part all of the characters are so awful as they a So far I m having trouble relating to the characters in this book It s about two fueding families in the Columbian drug mafia and there s a lot of sex and violence in the book I m just not that into it but I m enjoying practicing my Spanish. Sitting at the bar when a rival enters yells something about revenge for something that happened 20 years ago and opens fire Bullets whizz people dive for cover the Gökyüzü Mavi Kaldı gangster and hisirlfriend are riddled with no wait he s the only one who Corps Values: Everything You Need to Know I Learned In the Marines gets shot killing women isn t honourable No wait he s shot but only wounded And besides it was his cousin who did the shooting And besides the man he killed 20 years ago was ihs best friend and the two families men have been killing each other one by one since For honour No because ahost told them to No for power over the cocaine trade No for love No because violence breeds violence And besides I could see in his eyes that how did you see his eyes He always wears sunglasses I saw him return fire No he was unarmed he was there for love His men returned fire He was there aloneIn the end its all just men returned fire He was there aloneIn the end its all just What we know for sure in one of the larger cities in Colombia the two families Monsalve and Barragan have been at war for decades One by one they ve killed each other off always on one of the multiplying anniversaries of some previous death and now they re down to a few last men on both sides the warrior the thinker the poet the assassin living in luxury behind locked doors and tinted windshields since they might die tomorrow And of course their women wives irlfriends sisters whores And then all the other people in town who narrate the whole thing and occasionally start bickering debating Speculating Inventing To Account inventing to account the bits they re not actually present for How did they et here who Said What Who Did What what who did what loves whom who killed whom what were his last words where s it THIEME Atlas of Anatomy: Head and Neuroanatomy going to end when they make one last attempt to survive this circle of deathLeopard In The Sun is a deliciously double bottomed story It can easily be read as a pure drama a South American West Side Story withangsters a classic showdown between brothers forced by circumstances to be enemies As such it works very nicely if a little predictably it depends a lot on its characters where the women are somehow at the heart of it all even though perhaps exactly because the story doesn t shy away from it being a brutal macho society OK so at times it s a uestion of how flowery you like your prose but even that works into it somehowBecause somewhere in the corner of the story we re constantly reminded that a lot of that typical South American magic realism all the sun and the dark eyed women with heaving bosoms and the honourable bandits and the mystical old Indians that pop up a couple of times is a clich and that the narrators aren t an objective camera As a kick up the backside of literature it s not uite Bola.
